About the USO

uso1Some of you may already know this information about the USO, but I thought that a review of who and what the USO is and does would be helpful.  Because the MilitaryFares.com is a travel related site, this is a great place to put the information to help those who may not know all the things the organization may have to offer.

First, about the acronym, USO.  It stands for United Service Organizations.  The USO is a nonprofit, congressionally chartered, non-political organization.  Although not part of the government, it is recognized by the Department of Defense and Congress.  And, the President of the United States serves as Honorary Chairman of the organization.

According to USO’s History literature, the idea for the organization originated in 1941 when several organizations moved to provide support for a growing U.S. military.  The Salvation Army, the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), the National Catholic Community Services the National Travelers Aid Association and the National Jewish Welfare Board were all involved.  It is stated that “President Franklin D. Roosevelt created synergy among these agencies by forming the United Services Organizations, with the objective of providing the emotional support the troops needed” [Taken from the “History” tab on the USO.org site].

Since that time, many other organizations and individuals have gotten involved by giving donations, time, or services.  The USO in turn, has continued its mission of lifting the spirits of Service Members and their families.  The USO web site tells about all the many things it does (from sendoffs to homecomings to assisting with care packages) –so visit the site to find out more about activities.

Services may vary somewhat at different locations, but the mission remains the same: To lift the spirits of America’s Troops and their families.  The times I visited the USO while traveling, I found them to be very useful and comforting.  The facility was laid out mostly as a lounge and had a homey feeling. There were refreshments and snacks and places to work or relax.  It made the time waiting for the next flight very enjoyable.

How to Locate a USO While Traveling

You could always use a web search engine to see if there is a USO at your location/destination, but I would still check with the airport Information Desk to find out the most up to date information.
